Since I am the kind of gamer that takes forever to actually finish a game, writing timely reviews that people would actually care to read would be absolutely impossible. Instead, here’s a segment that’s just about the first day that I’ve had with a New Super Mario Bros. 2.

This release really bugs me.
I should love it more. I should be absolutely loving the game and not considering using every chance at saving as a way to bail on it to find other things to do. The level design seems to be creative, and there’s everything there that NEEDS to be there in order to be a Mario platformer, but I can’t help but be bored by New Super Mario Bros. 2.
After playing it for a day, I’ve managed to get through the first two worlds and even partially through a secret world that I accidentally stumbled onto the first twenty minutes in. This whole title is all about getting as many coins as you can, which means that the Mario Rule of getting an extra 1up after one hundred coins becomes laughable when you can breeze through a level and collect over nine-hundred coins in the limited time you’re given. There isn’t that much of a challenge in the enemies or finding each level’s three golden coins, and the only fun that I’m having so far with it is exploiting the coin-collection mechanics that are new to this series.
So far, I’ve found golden rings that give you an extra coin bonus with every enemy kill with the bonus multiplying with every chain-kill you get. I’ve found a golden fire-flower that does something similar but also changes every brick-block you spit a gold fireball at into golden coins. I donned this golden block on my head that added to my coin count with every running step I made. I was even offered a golden leaf after dying several times in a row due to some platforming mishaps, which I’m sure has some amazing golden powers too, but I refused to be enchanted by it’s golden siren song.
GET IT! THIS GAME IS ALL ABOUT GETTING THE GOLD!
To me, the secondary coin system contained within New Super Mario Bros. 2 is more interesting that the actual Mario game. Every level completed highlights the number of coins you’ve managed to collect within it with an overall count on the main menu that dispenses pop-up messages whenever you hit significant high-numbers. The game pushes you to try to achieve the million coin mark, but I’m not too sure how long this system will keep it’s luster or if even achieving this goal will even be worth the grind.
I’m hoping that New Super Mario Bros. 2 actually becomes challenging soon, because I’m finding it to be way too easy at this point. Even the secret world that weirdly marked the levels like Mushroom-1 and Mushroom-2 was a complete cake-walk! Truth be told, I think the excellent Super Mario Land 3D satiated my appetite for this kind of Mario game, so maybe I’m just living in a Mario-glut. New Super Mario Bros. 2 Box Art Revealed
While I was a fan of the first one for the Nintendo DS, I honestly cannot recall a single thing about it besides the crazy-fun multiplayer mode that only required one cart to play. I’m just hoping that this sequel has a better version of that (and a fun Mario game too, I guess).
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is set to be released on August 19th, 2012.
