Golden Moustache Presents ‘Sex in Video Games’
Pretty fantastic.
Final Cover for Nintendo Power Revealed
Nice homage to the first ever cover of the magazine in July of 1988.
Super Mario Bros. The Movie Merchandise Advert - Disney Adventures [June 1993]
The movie that was Bob Hoskins’ biggest disappointment and led John Leguizamo towards alcholism — all the merchandise from the horrible, horrible Nintendo flick.
That soundtrack looks mighty inviting though…
Super Mario 64 Advert [September 1996]
I still can remember seeing this game for the first time, being completely amazed at a three-dimensional Mario game in the middle of the Wal-Mart video game aisle.
Artwork for World 3 - Nintendo Power Strategy Guide for Super Mario Bros. 3 [1990]
Let’s be honest here — the Frog Suit desperately needs to make a comeback to get through any and all Mario water levels.
Artwork for World 5 - Nintendo Power Strategy Guide for Super Mario Bros. 3 [1990]
Sky Land was my favorite world in this game due to being able to explore some hard-to-reach areas in the Tower Level if you use your P-Wing. Sure, the red air-beetle stages were annoying and Giant Land had monstrous Goombas to kill, but there’s only one level in the game that has Kuribo’s Shoe, and that’s in World 5-3.
New Nuper Nario Nros. Noo
I’m absolutely amazed at how far Nintendo pushes the coin collecting aspect in New Super Mario Bros. 2 without featuring Wario! That’s the man’s whole schtick when he isn’t forcing you to play frantic minigames!
“Super Mario Bros. 2 Sports Festival” - Nintendo Power #1 [July/August 1988]
More off-model art featuring Mario characters, this time showcasing each person’s unique abilities for Super Mario Bros. 2. To be perfectly honest, you didn’t really need to pick anybody but Princess Toadstool to beat the game. Sure, Toad was faster at picking up turnips, but the Princess could float the entire length of a football field!
Sidenote: I think Nintendo has really dropped the ball by not returning to the weird world of Sub-Con in any Mario title since. Will Wart ever make his return to challenge Mario, Luigi and rest of the the Mushroom Kingdom gang*!?
*spoiler alert: nope.
“Super Mario 2” - Nintendo Power #1 [July/August 1988]
With Ars Technica breaking the news that Nintendo Power will be ceasing publication in December, I figure that today would be a good day to post some scans from Issue #1.
My older brother started a subscription with the third issue, and I ended up continuing collecting the magazine until the Gamecube era, so it’s a bit sad to see that it’ll no longer exist past 2012. It was Nintendo Power that helped me sharpen my Mortal Kombat II skills. I learned how to gain extra lives in Double Dragon II by killing off Player 2 in the magazine’s Classified Information section. Hell, the name of this blog was stolen from the publication as Player’s Pulse was their monthly mail-room section where they answered letters from fans!

I have several fond memories from my childhood involving the magazine, so consider today to be my half-assed tribute to Nintendo Power.
